October 15, 2009
Fifteen diverse young professionals gathered with the Buxton Initiative on Wednesday, October 15th, to discuss their religious identities and the unique trends of their generation compared to those prior. The event was held at the Case Foundation.
The conversation started with viewpoints on the positive and negative influences that pluralistic or secular societies have on an individual’s faith. People shared stories of their upbringings and experiences of working with youth in school and community settings. Lastly, the discussion touched upon the concept of a balance of belief and practice with varying viewpoints among Christian, Jewish and Muslim guests.
Adding unique perspectives to the conversation were our featured guests Emily Whitman from The Falls Church Student Ministries and Sarrah AbuLughod from the Washington Scholarship Fund. Buxton was also fortunate to welcome a guest from Turkey, who added his experiences of growing up in the Muslim world’s only secular country.
This gathering was the first Buxton Roundtable that we have hosted. These events will be smaller in size in order to encourage vibrant conversation in a more intimate space. Join our Facebook, Twitter, or email us at info@buxtoninitiative.org to know of our future events. Our next Roundtable, Blasphemy: A Conversation on Religious Freedom, will be on Thursday, October 22nd.
